Art & Design / Technology / Food Preparation & Nutrition The Art, Design and Technology Department aims to provide a stimulating and dynamic learning experience for all students. The Department’s highly successful teaching and learning approaches and curricula enable students to develop passion and expertise in a wide range of art and media. We offer a foundation course in KS3 with a lesson a week in Years 7 and 8 in Art and Design and DT (Product Design / Food and Nutrition). GCSEs are available in Art and Design, Food Preparation and Nutrition and Product Design. We also offer a range of A-Levels in Art and Design, Photography and Product Design at KS5. The Art, Design and Technology Department is proud of the achievement of its students, regularly celebrating work in school assemblies, around the school site and by entering local and national competitions. KS4 results in Food and Nutrition, Art and Design are strong, and KS5 results in both Art and Technology are above the national average. At the heart of our curriculum is an emphasis on creativity and personalised learning. We place a high value on each student's personal response. Many students go on to a creative future through university and on to the design industries using these courses. Stimulating creativity and thought beyond the curriculum is an important focus for the Art, Design and Technology Department. We have embedded visits and trips to local places of interests and national art galleries and museums in the curriculum as part of the KS5 programme of study. Accommodation, Resourcing and Facilities The Department is housed in three suited areas with eleven classrooms. It is equipped with two dedicated computer suites with specialist ICT software and hardware. There are two Food and Nutrition rooms for the students to use. The Art Department is largely open plan with a purpose built gallery space to showcase students’ work. CurriculumKey Stage 3Students learn in mixed ability groups, following and developing foundation skills in Art and Design. In Years 7 and 8 students are encouraged to learn and develop basic skills including personal learning and thinking skills. Students learn the basic language of design (line, shape, pattern, colour, form etc) and are introduced to relevant historical and cultural references. In Design Technology and Food and Nutrition projects are taught in 10 week rotations. Students can opt for their GCSE choices in Year 8, they begin their GCSE course in Year 9. Key Stage 4Students can also choose to study a GCSE in the following subjects: Art and Design (Edexcel GCSE) new specification 9-1 grading. This is a practical course which is made up of 60% coursework, which is taught throughout Years 9, 10 & 11. The exam is a practical exam in Year 11 and is worth 40% of the overall grade. Food and Nutrition (GCSE) new specification 9-1 grading. Practical skills and theory based skills are required. Students sit a range of practical tasks including Food Science, which are assessed along with a written exam at the end of the course. Product Design (AQA GCSE) new specification 9-1 grading. Practical work is part of the class work and coursework is 50% of the final GCSE. A written exam is worth 50%.
