Mathematics
The Mathematics Department aims to provide a stimulating, dynamic and academically rigorous experience for all our students. The Department encourages initiative, creativity and innovation which leads to very impressive student outcomes.
We are committed to fully developing student confidence in their own abilities and strive to demonstrate that the subject is rich, challenging and enjoyable.
We aim to develop an atmosphere of work and interest within our classes and hence nurture the self-motivation of our students.
Students are encouraged to apply mathematical skills and knowledge to everyday, functional situations as well as showing initiative when solving problems. We encourage our more able students to enter national competitions and value their participation and achievement.
Extra-curricular provision: The Department offers a range of enrichment activities. Our talented mathematicians are very successful in National Maths Challenges and are often invited to compete at the highest level. We also offer a KS3 Infinity Club for maths enthusiasts amd run revision workshops / morning maths to support students with preparation for examinations.
Curriculum
Key Stage 3: All students in KS3 have 8 one hour lessons per fortnight. All students follow the National Curriculum which is supported by differentiated text books, which students have online access to, and a personalised online learning platform to ensure students are suitably challenged and supported.
Key Stage 4: Students follow the GCSE (9-1) Mathematics course and the exam board we use is Eduqas. They have 7-8 one hour lessons each fortnight. All students have online access to their class text book and a personalised online learning platform to ensure they are suitably challenged and supported. Students have regular scheduled PPE assessments throughout this Key Stage. In addition to the GCSE, some of our most able students prepare for a Level 2 Further Maths qualification.
Key Stage 5: AS and A-Level Mathematics are extremely popular with students. Currently there are three Maths groups and a Further Maths group in each of Year 12 and Year 13. We follow the Edexcel course, ensuring that stretch and challenge is embedded throughout. We are very proud that many of our students continue studying maths related courses at university.
